Regaining mobility after spinal surgery: Narinder’s story
After a fall left Narinder with a fractured vertebra in his lower back, he continued to experience pain even after the injury had healed.
Narinder spent several weeks wearing a stabilising brace while his spine recovered. Although the fracture healed, the pain persisted and began to affect his everyday life.
“The main thing that I struggled with was the pain, not being able to stand up for a long period, having pain in the lower part of my back – it was too much.”
“It became clear that something more needed to be done,” he explained.
Further assessment confirmed that Narinder had lumbar spinal stenosis of the spinal cord, and surgery was recommended.
A place to find relief
After being referred to The Woodlands Suite, Private Care at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital through his workplace health insurance plan, Narinder saw a way forward to get the relief he needed.
“I was able to get an appointment quickly and met Mr Hassan for my first consultation,” he said. “Everything was explained clearly, and I felt confident in his recommendations.”
From the moment he arrived, the environment and attention to detail stood out.
“I really liked the look and feel of the hospital; it gave me confidence straight away.”
Calm, professional and supportive care
From his initial consultation through to surgery and recovery, Narinder describes the entire experience as seamless.
“The whole journey was so smooth and the care I received was above and beyond anything I expected”, he said.
On the day of surgery, Narinder felt reassured by the team caring for him, including his Consultant Surgeon, Mr Faizul Hassan, and Consultant Anaesthetist, Dr Egidio da Silva.
“I felt completely at ease,” he said. “Everything was explained to me, and I knew I was in safe hands.”
Throughout his stay, the support from staff made a lasting impression.
“The nurses were amazing. I felt completely looked after. I didn’t have to worry about anything, everything was taken care of.”
Early progress and recovery
Although still in the early stages of recovery, Narinder is already seeing positive changes.
“It’s still early days, but things are going really well,” he said. “I can already stand for longer than before, and walking is much easier. The pain just isn’t there anymore. I can sit down. I can play with the kids. It’s brought a lot of things back that I couldn’t do.”
These early improvements are helping him feel optimistic about the months ahead.
Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon, Mr Faizul Hassan said: “At The Woodlands Suite, our specialist team works closely together to provide a seamless, high standard of care throughout our patient’s journey. It’s very encouraging to see the progress Narinder has made so far, and we expect this to continue as he recovers.”
The difference is in the detail
Alongside his clinical care, it was the overall experience at The Woodlands Suite that stood out for Narinder.
“I honestly felt like royalty,” he said. “The rooms were spotless. Everything was so clean and well looked after.”
“The food was amazing,” he added. “I remember ordering breakfast and being surprised by how much was on the plate, it really added to the experience.”
Looking ahead
Focussed on his recovery, Narinder is already noticing the positive impact of his surgery and is looking forward to regaining even greater mobility.
“I’m so happy I made the decision to come to The Woodlands Suite,” he said. “It’s been an amazing experience.”
“The main thing I’m looking forward to doing now is just being myself. There is nothing holding me back now. I can just get on with my exercises and enjoy my life for a change rather than having the pain stopping me from doing anything.”
