Mr Pagkalos
Mr Pagkalos completed his undergraduate studies in his native Greece and was appointed to a two year academic Foundation Programme in the North West of England, moving to Birmingham in 2009 for core surgical training and was appointed to the Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Programme in 2010 for higher specialist training. Mr Pagkalos received training in all subspecialties of Orthopaedic Surgery and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh by examination (FRCS Orth) in 2017, gaining a certificate of completion of training (CCT) in 2018.
Mr Pagkalos completed two subspecialty fellowships focusing on hip and knee arthroplasty; at University Hospitals Dorset and the Orthopaedic Research Institute specialising in hip surgery under Professor Middleton, and the returning to the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital to focus on revision joint replacement procedures, joint replacement infection and limb salvage as a fellow for the world renowned Birmingham Bone Tumour Service.
Mr Pagkalos finds that working in a specialist hospital allows him to have a very focused practice, exclusively treating patients who need joint replacements of the hip and knee or patients with malfunctioning joint replacements who need revision surgery, working closely with the local Bone Infection Unit, a multidisciplinary team guiding the management of patients with infected joint replacements. Mr Pagkalos also treats patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory arthropathies who need hip and knee replacement surgery. He runs a combined clinic with rheumatology consultant colleagues at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Mr Pagkalos has published extensively in the field of hip and knee replacements as well as general orthopaedics with over 30 peer-reviewed publications. Research interests include hip replacement longevity and enabling technologies such as computer navigation and robotic-arm assisted joint replacement. Mr Pagkalos is currently recruiting patients to two Randomised Controlled Trials on Robotic arm-assisted Total Hip Replacement surgery and am the principal investigator on a study investigating the role of stromal cells in chronic inflammatory arthritis.
