Walking again and living again – Doreen’s story

Doreen is due to celebrate her 98th birthday in September, and she’s feeling the best she has in years following a life-changing total hip replacement at the Woodlands Suite – Private Care at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

Just a few months ago, Doreen was living in near constant pain, unable to walk and living in a care home. “It was a difficult time”, she recalls. After seeking treatment, she was referred to Mr Hussain at The Woodlands Suite in Birmingham - and the rest, as they say, is history.

Doreen’s daughter, Lesley, praised the Woodlands Suite team for providing excellent care and treatment throughout the process. “The staff made things so easy and were open and clear about how things would happen”, she said. “We got an operation date quickly, and the pre-operative assessment process was seamless.”

On the day of surgery, Doreen remembers her anaesthetist, Dr Chandran, fondly. “He was so good at explaining things to me.” She also recalled the exceptional nursing care - “The nurses were fantastic.”

One moment that stands out most clearly for Doreen is when she woke up after surgery. “Mr Hussain came to see me and said, ‘Doreen, you will walk again’. What better news could anyone have?” she said.

Now, just a few months after surgery, Doreen says, “The transformation in my life is amazing since my total hip replacement at the Woodlands Suite. I am living back at home and can now walk around my bungalow. It’s made such a difference – my life is worth living now”.

Doreen’s daughter, Lesley, is amazed at her mum’s independence. "My mum now needs far less support than before her surgery and is able to do things we never thought possible just months ago. She can stand long enough to make herself a cup of tea, prepare her lunch, or even do the odd job around the house.”

Filled with gratitude, Doreen adds, “I just want to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to Mr Shakir Hussain, his team and all the nurses and staff in the Woodlands Suite at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. Without Mr Hussain’s commitment to giving me back my quality of life by performing a total hip replacement operation despite my age, I would be confined to a bed and in a care home.”

Mr Hussain, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, reflected on the outcome: “It’s incredibly rewarding to see patients like Doreen regain their independence after a complete loss of mobility. I was impressed at her follow-up appointment when she walked from her car to the Outpatients Department, where my clinic was - she was using a walking aid, but her determination was impressive. This is why we do what we do. Our goal at the Woodlands Suite is to restore quality of life for our patients.”

For those facing similar struggles, Doreen has a clear message: “Don’t wait. Go now! I would recommend the Woodlands Suite at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital to everyone.”
